Old Live Oak School & Church. This was Mattie Belle Henderson’s husband's grandmother's school and where they went to church on Sunday. There is a big write up about it in the Henderson Stories




Henderson Crossing Bridge in Milam County, Texas. Named after 3rd Great Uncle Nicholas Henderson 1818-1869 (More on this Bridge in Henderson Stories) The Henderson Family was a very big influence in Milam County, Texas in the 1800s. The bridge is a Park now.


2nd Great Uncle Nicholas Hendeson 1818-1869 was a Presbyterian Minister, Teacher & Rancher. He is one of the Brushy Creek Men of the Hendersons. There is a crossroad in Milam County that still bears his name today. He built the first schoolhouse in San Gabriel and was the first teacher. His resting place is buried on West Fort Hood. In 1996 “Citizen of Texas” was placed on his grave. He was one of the largest landowners in Milam, Bell & Smith County. He was also in the Civil War. (See Civil War Chapter)

Laura Belle Honsinger Markham 1880-1963 and daughter Mary Pauline Markham 1916-1934. The story is and from the newspaper is that Mary Pauline & another girl were walking home and were picked up by a man for a ride. It ended up that the individual who gave them the ride was being accused of murder of Mary Pauline. After an investigation, it was actually that she had fallen out of the car by accident and was killed.

This book if you can ever find one, BUY IT  Sometimes a copy comes across ebay but it's sold within an hour. It has a lot of history on this side of the Henderson Family. I've been waiting for 1 ½ years for mine.

This was in some pictures my grandmother Audie Lee Henderson left me. On the back it said Papa’s house. So this would be Rufus & Hattie home when it was first built. It sure changed over the years from the above photo. I do remember playing and running around in the dog trot. I have an oil lantern that was kept on the wall inside the dog trot.
